Which window style fits your home?
Style changes how a window opens, how much light it lets in and how it looks from the street. Here are the six most common.
Double-hung
Two sashes slide up and down, and most tilt in so you can clean the glass from inside.
Best for: most rooms and traditional homes.
Price level: $$$
Casement
Hinged on the side and opened with a crank. It swings out wide and closes tight against drafts.
Best for: catching a breeze.
Price level: $$$
Sliding
The sash glides side to side. Simple to open, with fewer moving parts to wear out.
Best for: wide openings and easy use.
Price level: $$$
Picture
A fixed pane that does not open. Often paired with opening windows on either side.
Best for: views and natural light.
Price level: $$$
Bay and bow
Projects out from the wall to make a small seat or shelf and let in light from three sides.
Best for: adding space and curb appeal.
Price level: $$$
Awning
Hinged at the top and opens outward. Good for bathrooms, basements and above other windows.
Best for: fresh air in light rain.
Price level: $$$
Glass that keeps your home comfortable
The glass does most of the work on energy bills and noise. These are the options to know.
A common choice
Double-pane
Two layers of glass with a sealed gap between them. A solid step up from old single-pane windows.
Good for: most homes.
Price level: $$$
Triple-pane
Three layers for extra insulation and quiet. It costs more, so it pays off most where winters are harsh. Not every installer offers it, so ask.
Good for: cold climates and noisy streets.
Price level: $$$
Low-E coating and argon gas
A thin coating reflects summer heat and holds winter warmth. Argon gas between the panes adds insulation.
Good for: lower energy bills.
Price level: $$$
Not sure? Start here.
A good starting point for many homes is a double-hung window with a vinyl frame and double-pane Low-E glass. A local pro can adjust that for your home and climate.
What changes your price
Three things move the number most: how many windows you replace, the style and glass you choose, and the age and shape of your home. A free quote shows your exact price, and comparing several quotes helps you avoid overpaying.
